Matt was a slightly-above-average 9:18 steeplechaser and XC team captain at UC Davis in the '80s. Dave was a "real deal" steeplechaser around the same time at Stanford. They met when Stanford traveled to Davis one year for the Aggie Invitational Cross Country race. Aggies and Cardinal gathered afterwards for beers at Mr. B's. Matt and Dave have been friends ever since.
